Why EV sits above organization validation

Three verifications sit on top of the organization validation set: legal existence, operational status and the authority of the person requesting the certificate.

Legal existence verified
Sectigo confirms your company is registered and in good standing with the relevant authority.
Jurisdiction and registration number recorded
Two fields written into the certificate that organization validation does not carry.
Signing authority confirmed
The person requesting the certificate is verified as authorised to act for the company.
Specified by name in procurement
Tenders and vendor assessments frequently require extended validation rather than a lower tier.
Documents prepared for you
We assemble the submission and handle the queries that come back from the authority.
Harder to impersonate convincingly
An attacker registering a lookalike domain cannot obtain a certificate in your company's name.

What extended validation checks

Extended validation follows the standards set by the CA/Browser Forum. Six checks run before a certificate is issued.

Sectigo confirms your officially registered company name and that the entity is active and in good standing with the relevant authority. A registered trade name can be included and is linked to the legal entity.

Your physical business location is verified against government or business records to confirm an operating presence. PO boxes, virtual offices, forwarding addresses and care-of locations are not accepted.

Your business needs a working telephone number that appears in a trusted directory and matches your registered company details. This number is used for the verification call.

Sectigo confirms that the person placing the order is legally permitted to represent the organisation and sign on its behalf. This check does not apply at lower validation levels.

Control is confirmed by DNS record, a file placed on the website, or an approved address at the domain. We recommend DNS, which is the fastest and does not depend on the site being reachable.

A short call to your verified business number confirms the order and the authorisation behind it. You or an authorised contact answers and confirms the request, and the certificate is issued once that completes.

An extended validation certificate verifies the legal identity of your business before encrypting your website. The certificate authority confirms that your organisation is registered, operating and authorised to request the certificate, then records those details inside it alongside the encryption.

Domain validation confirms control of the name. Organisation validation adds a check of the company behind it. Extended validation goes further again, confirming legal existence, operating presence and the authority of the person making the request, and it records your jurisdiction and registration number in the certificate. Those two fields are the practical difference.

The certificate carries your verified company name, jurisdiction and registration number, which anyone inspecting it can see. That carries most weight on payment, login and account pages, and in procurement reviews that ask who a certificate was issued to.

Issuance follows the completion of every check, so the timing depends on how quickly documents are supplied and the verification call is answered. Accurate company details submitted first time is the single biggest factor.

Your registered legal company name, your operating address, a publicly listed business telephone number, the details of an authorised representative, and proof that you control the domain. We confirm what your jurisdiction requires before you order.

It is rarely a legal requirement. It is frequently a contractual one, since tenders, vendor assessments and enterprise procurement processes often specify extended validation by name where encryption alone does not satisfy the requirement.

EV is available for a single domain or as a multi-domain certificate covering several separate domains on one order. Wildcard coverage is not offered at this validation level, so subdomains are either listed individually on a multi-domain certificate or secured with an organisation validated wildcard.

Encryption strength is the same at every validation level, up to 256-bit TLS where the browser supports it. The difference is the depth of identity verification recorded in the certificate, not the cipher.

An attacker registering a lookalike domain cannot obtain a certificate in your company's name, because the authority verifies the legal entity before issuing. Lookalike domains can still exist, but none of them can be certified as you.

Installation is included when the domain is hosted with us. We generate the signing request, install the certificate and verify the chain. For certificates running on external hosting, our sales team can quote the installation separately.
