Which SSL certificate do I need?
It depends on how many names you need to cover and how much identity you want verified. One domain takes a Standard certificate, several separate domains take a Multi-domain certificate, and a domain with many subdomains takes a Wildcard. On top of that you choose how far we verify your business: domain control only, or verified company identity. The wizard narrows it to one recommendation in three questions.
What is the difference between DV, OV, and EV certificates?
All three use the same encryption. The difference is verification depth. DV confirms you control the domain and issues in minutes. OV additionally verifies your company against public business registries. EV applies the most rigorous verification and puts your verified company name in the certificate details. Encryption strength does not change between them.
Which certificate is best for an online store?
For stores taking payments, OV or EV is the stronger choice, because customers checking the certificate can see a verified company name rather than a domain alone. If the store runs several subdomains, a Wildcard certificate covers them under one certificate.
What is an SSL certificate and how does it work?
An SSL certificate encrypts the data passing between your website and its visitors, including passwords, contact details and payment information. It also removes the browser warnings shown on sites served over plain HTTP. The padlock and the https prefix indicate the connection is encrypted.
How long does it take to get my certificate?
Domain validated certificates are typically issued within minutes of confirming domain control. Organisation and Extended Validation take longer, because company records are verified before the certificate is issued. Turnaround depends on how quickly the certificate authority can confirm your business details.
What do I need to provide for OV or EV validation?
Company details are checked against public business registries, so your registration must be current and publicly verifiable. Additional confirmation, such as a verification call, may be requested by the certificate authority. Domain validated certificates require no business documents.
Can one certificate cover all my subdomains?
A Wildcard certificate covers your primary domain and its subdomains, so shop, blog and app share one certificate and new subdomains are covered as you create them. Deeper names, where a subdomain sits under another subdomain, need their own certificate.
Will an SSL certificate improve my Google ranking?
HTTPS is a confirmed ranking signal, and Google has recommended it since 2014. It is a lightweight signal rather than a decisive one, so treat it as one factor among many. The more direct effect is that sites served over plain HTTP now show a security warning, which costs visitors before ranking becomes relevant.
