Secure multiple domains. One certificate. Zero complexity.

Protect all your domains under a single Multi-Domain SSL—simplifying security, reducing costs, and scaling effortlessly as your business grows.

Secure multiple domains with one certificate

A Multi-Domain (SAN) SSL protects multiple fully qualified domain names—such as example.com, example.net, and brand.io—under one certificate, eliminating the need to manage separate SSLs for each website.

Reduce costs and simplify SSL management

Instead of purchasing and renewing individual SSL certificates for each domain, one Multi-Domain SSL centralizes security—reducing renewal costs, administrative overhead, and long-term operational complexity.

Scale instantly as your infrastructure grows

Add new domains to your certificate at any time using Subject Alternative Names (SANs)—ideal for SaaS platforms, eCommerce brands, APIs, and businesses managing multiple web properties.

Consistent encryption across all services

Every domain secured by your Multi-Domain SSL is protected with strong TLS 256-bit encryption—ensuring consistent security across customer portals, admin panels, APIs, and public websites.

Choose the right trust level for your business

Available with Domain Validation (DV) for fast deployment or Organization Validation (OV) for verified business identity—giving you flexibility based on compliance, trust, and customer expectations.

What is verified during Multi-Domain SSL validation

The security and identity checks completed before issuing a Multi-Domain (SAN) SSL certificate.

Wildcard SSL certificates are designed for teams operating multiple subdomains under a single primary domain that need to secure a primary domain and all of its subdomains under a single certificate. They are commonly used for scalable environments such as web applications, SaaS platforms, APIs, eCommerce stores, and internal services where multiple subdomains must be protected consistently.

The validation process for a Wildcard SSL depends on the level of trust you select. Domain Validation (DV) confirms technical control over the domain, while Organization Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) include additional identity and business verification steps. Regardless of validation level (DV, OV, or EV), the same strong TLS encryption is applied across all secured subdomains.

Most OV SSL certificates are issued within 1–2 business days. Pladinum guides you through every step at no extra cost.

Domain Validation (DV) Multi-Domain SSL certificates confirm technical control over each domain included in the certificate. No business documents or identity checks are required—only proof that you manage the domains being secured.

To complete validation, the certificate authority verifies that you control every fully qualified domain name (FQDN) submitted with the order. This is typically done using automated methods such as DNS-based validation or approved email authentication. Once domain ownership is confirmed, the certificate can be issued quickly—often within minutes.

Recommended: DNS-based domain control validation (DCV)

DNS-based validation is the preferred and most reliable method, especially as certificate lifespans continue to shorten.

» Option 1: DNS CNAME-based validation
A DNS CNAME record is added to your domain, pointing to a validation target provided by the Certificate Authority.

How it works:
• Sectigo provides a unique CNAME hostname and destination
• You add the CNAME record to your domain’s DNS
• Sectigo verifies the record automatically

» Option 2: DNS TXT-based validation (random value method)
You add a TXT record containing a unique random value to your domain’s DNS zone.

Record format:
• Name: _pki-validation.your-domain.com
• Type: TXT
• Value: < random_value_provided_by_sectigo >

Important details:
• The random value is unique per order
• Valid for 30 days
• Once detected, domain control is confirmed automatically

» Alternative: Email-based domain validation
Email-based validation remains supported but is restricted to pre-approved role addresses only. WHOIS email addresses are no longer accepted (effective June 15, 2025).

Allowed validation email addresses:
• admin@your-domain.com
• administrator@your-domain.com
• webmaster@your-domain.com
• hostmaster@your-domain.com
• postmaster@your-domain.com

How it works:
• Sectigo sends an authorization email to one selected address
• You confirm ownership via the approval link
• The certificate is issued shortly after confirmation

Issuance timeframe
✔ Typically within minutes after successful validation
✔ DNS-based methods are fastest and easiest to renew
✔ No business checks, documents, or identity verification required

Extended Validation (EV) Multi-Domain SSL certificates follow the most rigorous industry standards for identity and business verification. While the requirements are strict by design, Pladinum’s validation specialists guide you through each step to keep the process efficient and friction-free.

This validation level is recommended for organizations handling sensitive user data—such as payments, financial information, customer accounts, or regulated transactions—across multiple domains.

What is verified during EV Multi-Domain validation

EV validation confirms that your organization is legally registered, operational, and authorized to request an SSL certificate for the domains included in the order. The process verifies:

• Legal existence of the organization
• Physical business location
• Operational status
• Authority of the certificate requester
• Control over each domain listed in the certificate (SANs)

Domain control verification methods

Before business verification is finalized, ownership of all domains included in the Multi-Domain certificate must be confirmed using one of the following approved methods:

• DNS CNAME validation (recommended)
• DNS TXT record validation
• HTTP(S) file-based challenge

These methods confirm technical control over each fully qualified domain name (FQDN) included in the certificate.

Organization verification & confirmation call

As part of EV validation, a verification call is required to confirm:

• The authenticity of the certificate request
• The signer’s authority to request the certificate
• The signer’s role and title within the organization

This call is placed to the main, publicly listed business phone number associated with the organization. Calls cannot be made to direct lines or mobile numbers unless they can be independently verified through trusted public sources.

If additional information is required, a Pladinum validation specialist will contact you by email with clear next steps.

Important requirements and validation tips

• Legal name required
All EV certificates must be issued under the organization’s registered legal name. If a trade name or DBA is used, both the legal name and tradename will appear on the certificate.

• Sole traders and partnerships
Sole proprietors, sole traders, and certain partnerships require verification of the principal individual. In these cases, the legal name is the owner’s full name.

• No DBA-only certificates
Certificates cannot be issued under a tradename or DBA alone without a verified legal entity.

• Physical business address required
Use the address where business operations are conducted. PO Boxes, virtual offices, mail forwarding services, or registered agent addresses are not accepted.

If verification cannot be completed

If any part of the validation cannot be confirmed initially, Pladinum will contact you with clear resolution options—ensuring transparency and minimizing delays.

Typical issuance timeframe

• Domain control verification: same day
• Business and authority verification: 1–5 business days
• Issuance occurs immediately after all checks are completed

Frequently asked questions

A Multi-Domain SSL certificate (also called SAN or UCC SSL) allows you to secure multiple fully qualified domain names under a single certificate. It’s ideal for businesses managing several websites, brands, or services that need centralized SSL management.

A Multi-Domain SSL secures multiple distinct domain names (e.g. example.com, example.net, brand.org), while a Wildcard SSL secures one primary domain and all its subdomains (e.g. *.example.com).

Choose Multi-Domain SSL if you manage multiple separate domains; choose Wildcard SSL if you manage many subdomains under one domain.

Most Multi-Domain SSL certificates start with a set number of included domains and can be expanded to secure up to 200+ domains, depending on the certificate authority and plan you choose.

Yes. A single domain entry typically covers both the www and non-www versions, depending on how the certificate is configured during issuance.

Absolutely. Multi-Domain SSL certificates are commonly used to secure Microsoft Exchange, Office communications, mail servers, and collaboration tools, where multiple hostnames must be protected under one certificate.

Multi-Domain SSL certificates are available with:

• Domain Validation (DV) for fast issuance
•Organization Validation (OV) for verified business identity
• Each option provides the same strong encryption, with different levels of identity verification.

• DV Multi-Domain SSL: typically issued within minutes after domain validation
• OV Multi-Domain SSL: usually issued within 1–5 business days after business verification

Pladinum guides you through each step to ensure fast approval.

Multi-year plans offer lower overall pricing, predictable costs, and long-term coverage. While certificates must still be reissued annually due to industry rules, your price is locked in upfront—eliminating renewal surprises and simplifying long-term planning.
